Weinerlebnis in Moselurlaub
Six of Germany's 13 wine-growing regions are located in Rhineland-Palatinate. The Ahr, Palatinate, Middle Rhine, Nahe, Rheinhessen, and of course Mosel-Saar-Ruwer all have their vineyards in Rhineland-Palatinate. This means the state is responsible for approximately 65% of Germany's wine production. Wine can be explored on foot, either along the Mosel Heights Trail or through the vineyards in the Cochem holiday region, or, for a thrill, on the Calmont via ferrata, Europe's steepest vineyard in the Cochem Krampen. Naturally, a wine tasting at one of the many wineries, wine taverns, or seasonal wine bars is a must.
Nature experience on the Moselle
Experience nature actively with canoe trips, for example from Ernst to Treis-Karden, or the day canoe tour from Ediger-Eller to Ernst. 15-17 kilometers along one of the most beautiful stretches of the river will let you experience the Moselle Valley in a completely different way. Cochem, the metropolis of the red vineyard peach, offers a harvest festival of this rare fruit in cooperation with the association "Roter Mosel Weinbergpfirsich eV" (Red Moselle Vineyard Peach Association), as well as a plum festival in the Sehl district.

History of the Moselle
The Moselle cultural landscape boasts a long tradition. Even the ancient Romans utilized the unique climatic and geological conditions of the river landscape to cultivate wine. The Moselle wine region is the oldest wine-growing region in Germany. Finds documenting the first winegrowing date back to the time of the Celts, who settled in the region around 500 BC. However, it was the Romans who truly developed viticulture on the Moselle. After the Romans, monks further refined winemaking during the Middle Ages. Along the Moselle, you will find numerous early historical artifacts, from the beginnings of human settlement through the Celts and Romans to the High Middle Ages. The Romans, in particular, shaped the cultural landscape of the Moselle. But the Celts also left their mark in many places. Particularly noteworthy are the Igel Column, the Porta Nigra, the Imperial Baths and the Amphitheater in Trier, the Roman tombs in Nehren, and the Martberg Archaeological Park in Pommern. Between the towns of Pommern and Karden, approximately 180 meters above the Moselle River, lies the Martberg. For many centuries in antiquity, this was a religious and political center. Around 100 BC, the Celtic tribe of the Treveri built a large fortified settlement, a so-called oppidum, on the Martberg.
